From a French Barn to the Heart of Oxford
Our journey began in a draughty barn in the French countryside, where we restored an old coffee roaster and taught ourselves the art of roasting—one smoky afternoon and singed eyebrow at a time. Those humble beginnings soon became a passion for craft coffee roasting, and the support from our neighbours encouraged us to keep going.
The real shift happened when we met a representative from a Cameroonian coffee cooperative at a market in the South of France. His stories of smallholder farmers producing exceptional coffee yet struggling for fair pay inspired us to build something meaningful—an ethical coffee business rooted in direct trade and transparency.

Today, Red Step Coffee is proud to be an ethical coffee roaster in Oxford, working directly with small-scale farmers in Cameroon. We eliminate middlemen, ensuring farmers receive fair prices and long-term support. Through our profit-sharing model, a portion of every sale goes back to farming communities, creating a more equitable and sustainable supply chain.
We roast in small batches right here in Oxford to maintain freshness and flavour, with a special focus on Cameroon Arabica coffee—known for its rich, bold character and unique regional profile.
