Terra Noun – Cameroon

Terra Noun is a brilliant community initiative based in the Noun region of Cameroon. Their mission? To help local family farms shift towards more sustainable and diverse growing practices—especially through agroforestry and coffee polyculture.

Instead of the traditional monoculture coffee systems that damage soil and ecosystems, Terra Noun promotes a smarter way: growing coffee alongside fruits and vegetables, using organic principles and less land. It’s better for the planet and better for people.

Some of the amazing things Terra Noun is doing

  • Supporting 1,200 members (800 of them women) across 26 villages

  • Regenerating 200 hectares of soil

  • Training 6 women farmers every year

  • Helping farmers grow more food while earning more from better-quality coffee

  • Planting over 42,000 trees

  • Providing school supplies for 180 pupils each year across 5 local schools

Meet Soule Mfondouo, the founder

“I started Terra Noun in 2013 to offer an alternative to destructive farming models. Our approach means we grow more in less space, without relying on harmful inputs. We’ve produced over 37 tonnes of fruit and much better coffee—sold for nearly double the price compared to 10 years ago. In 2021, I also launched Yamo Café in France to help spread the idea of coffee gardens—where coffee trees grow under fruit trees, surrounded by vegetables. It’s a beautiful and sustainable way to farm.”

At Red Step Roasters, we’re honoured to support these two organisations. They’re showing what’s possible when people come together with purpose, passion, and care—for each other and for the planet.

Flo’s – The Place in the Park – Oxford

Right here in our hometown, Flo’s is a warm, welcoming community hub based in Florence Park. It’s all about bringing people together, celebrating difference, and tackling the big issues—like inequality, social isolation, and the climate crisis.

What makes Flo’s special:

  • A vibrant community café serving affordable, globally inspired food made with local ingredients

  • A home to projects focused on food security, equal access to healthcare, education, and family support

  • A plastic-free refill shop for dry goods, household items, and more

  • A workplace that values inclusion, wellbeing, and community-led decision making

  • A Nature Nursery where children learn through outdoor play and nature

As a cooperative, Flo’s is run by and for the local community

They work with local health and food organisations to tackle root causes of poverty and put people with lived experience at the centre of change.

They’re also serious about sustainability—reducing waste, protecting biodiversity, and playing their part in the fight against climate change.

As one local put it: “I always feel at home at Flo’s. It’s an extraordinarily inclusive space.”
